The Seminar for Deans (Directors) of Science Communication in the YRD successfully held by SMC

On the afternoon of May 20th, under the guidance of the Ministry of Science and Technology and sponsored by the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission, the Seminar for Deans (Directors) of Science Communication in the YRD co-organized by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai Science and Technology Museum and Shanghai Institute of Science and Technology was successfully held in the World Meeting Room by the Huangpu River. The seminar invited 11 deans and directors of science communication in the Yangtze River Delta region to jointly focus on the development of science communication in the new era and to exchange and discuss important topics such as the cultivation of science communication talents.

With the theme of "Collaborative Education • Create the Future", this seminar has two keynote speech sessions: "Science Communication Discipline Construction and Talent Training Reform" and "Innovation of Science Communication Industry-university-research Collaborative Education Mechanism".

The session "Science Communication Discipline Construction and Talent Training Reform " was hosted by Wei Lu, Young Changjiang Scholar of Ministry of Education and Dean of College of Media and International Culture of Zhejiang University.

Prof. Li Benqian, Dean of the School of Media and Communication of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Distinguished Professor and "Changjiang Scholar" of the Ministry of Education, delivered a keynote speech on “the Cross-Cultivation Mode of Science Communication Talents for the Strategy of Strengthening China through Science and Technology". Based on the practice of SJTU, Professor Li Benqian introduced the overall framework and basic thoughts of the cultivation of science communication talents, and explained the concept of the cultivation and education of science communication talents in the trinity of "knowledge, ability and quality".

Zhang Dawei, executive Deputy Director of the National Key Research Base for the Construction of University Journalism Textbooks and professor of Fudan Journalism School, delivered a keynote speech on the topic of "Industry-university-research Practice of Science Communication Education".

Wang Feng, Dean of the School of Communication of East China Normal University and a Young Changjiang Scholar of the Ministry of Education, shared several reflections on the influence of journalism and communication under the background of rapid development of new technology in his keynote speech "Big Language Model and Development of Communication Discipline".

Yan Sanjiu, Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication of Shanghai University, gave a keynote speech titled "How to Cultivate First-class Innovative Science Communication Talents". Starting from the background of the ecological reconstruction of the media industry promoted by the Internet of everything, he shared his rethinking of the "practice" concept of scientific journalism and communication education.

Wang ChenYao, Director of the Journalism Innovation Lab of the School of Journalism and Communication, Nanjing University, delivered a keynote speech entitled “Science Journalism in the Digital Age: Challenges and Innovations”. In her opinion, the future development of science journalism needs to establish a cognitive "cooperation network", innovate the narrative mode of science news, and promote the reform of science journalism education practice, such as curriculum construction, campus media, and university-enterprise cooperation.

The session "Innovation of Science Communication Industry-university-research Collaborative Education Mechanism" was hosted by Prof. Li Benqian, Distinguished Professor and "Changjiang Scholar" of the Ministry of Education and Dean of the School of Media and Communication of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Liu Jian, Deputy Director of Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, delivered a keynote speech titled "Paths and Reflections on the Collaborative Development of Industry-university-research in Shanghai Planetarium". Liu Jian introduced the construction concept of "connecting people and the universe" of Shanghai Planetarium, explained the realistic demand for science talents of the Planetarium from the perspective of exhibits, and told the practical story of the cooperation of production, education and research of Shanghai Planetarium from the aspects of the construction of the planetarium, popular science exhibits and national education.

Wei Lu, Dean of the College of Media and International Culture of Zhejiang University and Young Changjiang Scholar of the Ministry of Education, delivered a keynote speech on "Four Collaborations in Cultivating Top Innovative Talents in Science Communication", which includes "whole-staff collaboration", "whole-subject collaboration", "whole-course collaboration" and "whole-globe collaboration".

Zhang Conghui, Deputy Director of Shanghai Institute of Science and Technology, delivered a keynote speech on the topic of “Education and Technology Talents Collaboration, Building a New Pattern of Science Communication”. Zhang Conghui elaborated the significance of science popularization from the perspective of national strategy, and introduced the achievements of Shanghai in the linkage mechanism of popular science work, the building of characteristic popular science brands, the construction of popular science facilities, the deepening of international exchanges and the cultivation of multi-level talents.

Zhou Rongting, Executive director of the Department of Communication of Science and Technology of the University of Science and Technology of China and director of the Institute of New Media of the Institute of Advanced Research, gave a keynote speech entitled "Construction of New Liberal Arts in Science Communication: Integration Practice of industry-university-research in Science Communication” introducing the training practice of science and technology communication with the integration of culture and science and technology driven by technology.

Wang Guoyan, academic member of the Public Communication of Science and Technology Network (PCST) and Director of Science and Technology Communication Center at School of Communication of Soochow University, shared his views on “The Development and Collaborative Education of Science Communication from the Interdisciplinary Perspective”. He introduced the interdisciplinary performance of science communication from the aspects of the impact of science and technology on society, environment and climate communication, health communication, science education and culture, scientific community communication, scientific innovation and system improvement, etc.

Lu Yu, director of the Industry Committee of Shanghai Science Popularization Education Base Association, delivered a keynote speech on “Science Popularization Education, Science and Technology, Talent Integration and Innovative Education”. Lu Yu pointed out that innovative education is aimed at cultivating people's innovative spirit and ability, which plays a key role in connecting the "education, science and technology, talents" trinity.

In the Seminar for Deans (Directors) of Science Communication in the YRD, 11 scholars discussed the construction of new liberal arts in science communication, collaborative talent cultivation, generating wonderful exchange of ideas and views. This seminar further deepens the collaborative development and cooperation in the field of science communication in the Yangtze River Delta region, and lays a good foundation for the joint training of first-class science communication talents. The YRD region will continue to fully implement the strategy of "one body and two wings" of scientific innovation and science communication, and make unremitting efforts to better realize the strategic goal of "Strengthening China through Science and Technology ".
